Client Story

Protecting Software Intellectual Property

Summary

We worked with a product manufacturer to assess and improve the security of their deployed product, to provide assurance to them and their potential investors.

Client need

For products that are about to launch or are new to the market, the protections in place around their key intellectual property are paramount to the security and future of the manufacturer.

We worked with a company producing intelligent automation equipment who had concerns over the protection of their intellectual property within their product software. With our combined experience in embedded systems software development and software security, we reviewed the protective measures currently in place, and suggested improvements in their build and deployment processes.

What we did

As part of this engagement, we completed a reverse-engineering exercise of their software, highlighting where their existing development processes have an impact on an attacker looking to understand their product.

We researched and reported on further tools and techniques that could bolster their efforts, ranging from simple small coding techniques to hardware protected trusted-execution mechanisms.

Client benefit

As a result, they are able to provide themselves and their investors assurance on the effort required to identify and replicate their intellectual property. They also have a better understanding of the efficacy of different anti-reverse engineering efforts, and illustrations of the effect they have.
